Pressure-treated battens

Battens are timber products used where smaller sections are sufficient, or where lighter, narrower strips are required than conventional boards. They are pressure-treated for greater resistance.

Battens made from northern Swedish timber

Norra Timber battens are high-quality products with a close-grained, small-knot structure. They are carefully selected to ensure that knots are not too large and annual rings are not too wide, reducing the risk of breakage during installation. The battens have a sawn surface with sharp edges for easy handling and installation. They are less than 38 millimetres thick and less than 63 millimetres wide.

Applications

Battens are used in various parts of roof construction, with their dimensions determining their specific purpose. Counter battens are first installed vertically from ridge to eaves. Horizontal tile battens are then fixed to the counter battens to support the roof tiles. The eaves batten is the lowest batten at the eaves and should have a larger section than the other battens.

Top environmental assessment rating

The close annual rings in our northern Swedish pine, which contains a high proportion of heartwood, mean that very little preservative solution penetrates our products. Instead, it is primarily the heartwood’s natural resistance to decay that protects Norra Timber products, reducing the amount of preservative required. As a result, we receive the highest ratings in the various environmental assessment systems, and our in-house treatment process has the lowest environmental impact rating according to Byggvarubedömningen.

We can supply green pressure-treated timber in accordance with the Nordic Wood Preservation Council’s requirements in all the most common construction dimensions and product types: decking, exterior cladding, structural timber, posts and handrails.

About wood preservatives

The wood preservatives used in Sweden are carefully controlled and approved by the Swedish Chemicals Agency and regulated under the EU Biocidal Products Regulation to ensure minimal environmental impact.

The solution used for pressure treatment contains copper salts, the same type of substances used in antifouling paints to control algae. Copper is an essential metal for both people and the natural environment, but at excessive concentrations it can be toxic to aquatic organisms. However, the pressure-treatment solution contains less than four grams of copper per linear metre of timber.
